PS3 General Discussion Empty PS3 General Discussion

Post  Adminassassin Sat Apr 03, 2010 11:54 pm

It started getting mentioned in the PS2 thread, so I thought I'd make a general discussion thread about it.

I recently bought a 60GB, backwards compatible "phat" PS3 along with a dozen or so games from a fellow student at my college. Before that< I'd been using my roommate's PS3. Today I bought AFRO SAMURAI and TOMB RAIDER: UNDERWORLD used at Blockbuster to bring my tally up to 14.

Nice that you've finally gotten an Playstation 3. What do you think of it?

Right now, I do not have a Playstation 3, but that might change this year. My grandfather sent an application to Albertson. Given that I get approved, I should start working sometimes in May. I should be able to afford a PS3 by October.

Their are many reasons why I'm getting one, but the main reason is Gran Turismo 5, which has been my most anticapated game since Super Smash Bros. Brawl came out. This is the main reason why I've been wanting one. Hopefully, I'll be able to afford the system in a few months after I get a job.

Now why a few months if I'm working at an official store? Well first off, I heard that for the first ninty days, you only get around $4.25 an hour in Texas, which adds up to around $100, not including income taxes which deducts money. On top of that, 3/4 of my stuffs will go to more important things. It'll be awhile, but I'll most likely get an Playstation 3, but it's still not guarateen.

This is a little off-topic, but why the 90-days Texas thing? I've never heard of anything like that.

D'oh!
I need to get a job too ASAP.
If there is one last videogame system I'll buy, it's the Sony PlayStation 3. Yeah sure, the first 2 years it was out, it didn't have many quality titles but it's been out for 4 years now and it's library is just as good if not better than the 360's. I regret getting a 360. If only Microsoft didn't make the darn thing so...'fragile' if you what I mean.

You're so lucky Adminassassin, it's really hard to find a backwards compatible PS3 these days. I'd like to find one myself because my PS2 could bite the dust any moment. If I can't find one, then I'll just go ahead and buy the Slim...which is still pretty darn big if you ask me.

Saving up for a PS3 also means that I can't buy any new games for a couple months.

My first game will be MGS4. Big Boss and his 'made in USA' eyepatch pirat

Also FREE ONLINE is a plus.

@adminassassin: sorry if this question is really weird, but how do you know your PS3 is backwards compatible? My brother got a PS3 from our cousin and I'm just curious if it is. And like Donth8, I'm worried about my PS2, I don't know if it has much life left. One of the controllers is wonky, so I'm kind of worried. (and I have yet to finish any PS2 games xD )

yeah, add me to the list of people who needs to find a job. Laughing

Read this: http://www.paywizard.org/main/Minimumwageandovertime/MinimumWageStudents

But yeah, we're getting off-topic.

@Donth8: I'm also really hoping to get an PS3 soon. I know it means I won't be able to buy a game for like four months, but depending on the release date, the first game I'm likely to get for the PS3 is Gran Turismo 5.

Of course I'll get more games for the system, but that's the game that made me want the system so much. Here's to hoping you succeed in getting an PS3 as well.

Oh and um, free online also increase my desire for the system.

Well, if you stick in a PS2 disc, does it play? All jokes aside, if you google "ps3 model versions" you should get a list of the different models. *No* slims play ps2, but 1 of the 2 60GBs does, as well as two other models IIRC.

I've also heard they might be doing a system update tio let more mdoels play ps2 titles. We'll see.
Also, ALL models should be compatible with PsOne games, if you're interested.

yeah, it's a phat. I'll have to try that out tomorrow. It would be neat if sony did let all models play ps2 games.

I still have to check out the internal memory as well. I don't really play on it that much. I've just messed around with Little Big Planet.

Hey Adminassassin, if you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay for the used PS3?

Around $325, which included the system and all cables, 2 wireless controllers and charge cables, and 12 games.

I just checked btw, and it does not work T____T (It's the 80 G phat). I guess I'll have to invest in a new PS2 if the current one does die.

Yeah PS2s are relatively cheap now.

I might be selling mine on eBay in the near future...still haven't decided since it'd be expensive/a pain to ship and I'd have to sell all my PS2 GH stuff as well since it doesn't work with the PS3.

Some PS2 games don't run very well when they're played on a PS3. Some games lag etc.

That's one good reason why you should keep the PS2.

Can anyone confirm that you can actually save with an Playstation game on an PS3? And I mean ones that aren't already on the PS Classic Store.

Yes,at least on mine (that plays PsOne and PS2.) You create an "internal memory card" on the hard drive for ps1 and ps2 seperately. Then you play a game ofthat system and when it comes time to save, it saves there instead of on the external memory card.

That backwards compatability update better come here soon. The chances of me getting a 60 gig PS3 are slim to none.

Also, when I borrowed my uncle's PS3 (80GB), the background download only works when the PS3 is turned on unlike the 360, which works even when it's turned off. Did they fix this?

Nope. Then again, most of my downloads fail, so THAT hasn't been the problem for me.

So there is no way to port in your previous save files? well that sucks. Guess I'll be playing all my PSX games on the PS2 for now.

That's just amazing. I'll be getting the Slim PS3's, so I'll most likely start getting Playstation game as well. No need for recommendations yet thought.

PS3 General Discussion Empty Me WANT!

Post  Donth8 Tue Apr 06, 2010 1:38 am

Oh ya, $325 for a 60GB PS3 with all the cables, 2 controllers, and 12 games is really a good deal.
A brand new 120GB Slim is $300 that comes with all the cables and one controller.

I'm think of selling my 360 and all my 360 games if I want to get it sooner but I can go and get a job instead but I'll have to wait a few months to have enough money for a brand new Slim. What do you guys think I should do?
