One more thing that kinda bothered me.
Kouta and Yuka kinda had that intimate relationship between each other throughout the anime. What's wrong with that? They're COUSINS!
The whole time, they acted as if they were oblivious to the fact that they were family members. Can anyone tell me why it was alright to fall in love with a first cousin?
heh. That was the thing that disturbed me the most in the anime. Strangely enough, this theme of first cousins being in-love is used quite a bit in shounen romances (the cousin is almost always the 'other' girl and they don't hook up). I'm not sure if this is true, but I heard somewhere that it is ok in Japan to marry your first cousin (only your bro/sis is taboo). But again, I don't know whether that is true or just people making Guano up (like they do a lot)...so I wouldn't draw any conclusions.
btw, was there really that much nudity in Elfen Lied? It's been a while since I watched it...so maybe my memory is fuzzy, but I don't remember lots of nudity, only lots of blood.
And guys, don't hurt me....but Elfen Lied was ok in my book, nothing special, but good enough to watch till the end. I found the characters really uninteresting, and what kept me watching was all the mysterious about Lucy and the Diclonus (sp?). If it wasn't for the emotional scenes with Lucy and her dog, the anime would have been dull. Maybe I'm just jaded because I watch and read too much....
Re: Elfen Lied
@soaring_wings I recall reading about people in Japan being allowed to marry their cousin but I didn't know that they applied that to animes too.
Since you stated it as your opinion and not as a fact, were not going to hurt you (ok, that was messed up )
Unless you watched the censored version, yes there was A LOT of nudity in Elfen Lied. There was more nudity than there was violence. How could you forget the nudity? K I'm gonna shut up now

Re: Elfen Lied
@Donth8: I might have watched the censored one, I'm not too certain. I wasn't really aware there was a censored one...so I just watched whatever was available. I do recall Lucy being nude in the first episode....but after that....I don't really remember.
That reminds me Terra, surprisingly (or maybe not?), it's quite common both in shoujo and hentai. In shoujo though, it's treated as taboo and forbidden love. Actually, probably more disturbing is hentai titles featuring a son and his mother. Which leads me to believe, it's some sort of fetish, or just used for anguish (as in boy/sis relationships in shoujo)
Terra wrote:Cousin marriages are allowed in the US too, albeit in only some states and it's apparently quite common in a lot of Middle Eastern countries too. Yes, It's wrong (I mean seriously!) but trust me, it could've been worse. That was nothing compared to "I Love My Younger Sister/Boku wa Imōto ni Koi o Suru". I remember seeing the 1 Hour OVA (Which apparently compressed a bit too much of the story) and it's about an incestous relationship between a twin brother and sister.
So yeah...

Re: Elfen Lied
You guys are being good so feel free to continue the current topic but I'm staying away from it.
I will address the "censored" topic though. As far as I know, if you watched the dub, you watched the uncensored version. Some animes are censored in their first Tv runthrough in Japan and since fansubbers usually get their material that way, if you watched one of those it could be censored.
Adult Swim actually wanted to show Elfin Lied back when it was awesome and actually showed more than 1 anime at a time. But they decided that their necessary editing would tear it to shreds and make it pointless.

Whoa, I learn something everyday.
Anyways, you said it's been awhile since you last saw the anime and your not certain if it was the uncensored or the censored one. It wouldn't hurt to watch it again would it? Just like what Adminassassin said, a censored version of the anime would butcher it and render it pointless. It might not change your opinion on the anime but there is a difference between the uncensored and censored version.
lol double post. Ain't my fault :P
I read the first 5 chapters of Elfen Lied last and I'm liking so far.
Compared to the anime, the manga:
-is longer
-is more detailed
-starts out slightly different
-has the same level of gore and nudity
-has a slightly different script
-has the more satisfying turn of events (for me anyway)
In the beginning of the anime, Lucy already escaped her "cage" and was on a killing spree. In the manga, they were preparing to transport her to a more secure research facility.
In the anime, that chick that Lucy uses as a meatshield was decapitated immediately after she bumps into Lucy. In the manga, she was taken hostage by Lucy and she agrees to sacrifice herself before Lucy decapitates her and before the soldiers open fire.
In the manga, that soldier dude person whose name I can't remember never pointed a gun to one of his fellow soldiers but he did in the anime.
Those are a few of the many difference between the manga and the anime. I'm liking the manga more at the moment.
Re: Elfen Lied
She has to be, to the best of my knowledge, the manga was never officially published outsideof Japan.
Re: Elfen Lied
Donth8 is a she? Sorry, I'm confused as the profile says Male.Adminassassin wrote:She has to be, to the best of my knowledge, the manga was never officially published outsideof Japan.
And I thought so. It's a real shame it was never released officially in English but we have to make do I guess.

I can always put my gender as Female in the profile to avoid confusion. We don't have enough girls in this site. Just kidding. Cheers dudes and dudettes.
Anyways, what I did was look up "Elfen Lied Manga" in google. Some of the sites no longer host the manga but this one does.

Thanks for the link. I don't have too much time to read it right now but I'll keep that bookmarked.

Re: Elfen Lied
Exactly how gruesome is gruesome in this series? I've not seen this show, but I keep hearing it's "really gruesome and has loads of nudity" as though that really clarifies much. I have to admit, I just won't even bother if its another medium for glorifying rape and incest, etc.
Yes, I'm a little leery about what I just randomly start watching so I thought I'd ask you folks.

Re: Elfen Lied
Nudity=almost all if not all is nonsexual. Nyuu's character just doesn't understand certain things and wearing clothes is one of them. She's a lot of the nudity.
Incest=Between cousins, and not much amounts of it (that is shown.) Really, its a side-story in the end.
Gore=R-rated material but nothing too especially over the top or something that will make you sick.

Re: Elfen Lied
Well, that's not nearly as bad sounding as some people have tried to portray. I was getting this picture from some people like this show was mentally warping and traumatizing... which I kinda doubted because so many people seem to like it.

Re: Elfen Lied
@Admin Yeah, the incest part was more of a minor conflict between two characters so the story won't feel like it's too focused on the main conflict.
@Valentine Good point. Why would so many people like it if it was traumatizing? People have their own opinions but the best part is that no one is forcing you to watch it when it comes to anime.

Except me. Watch it. NAO.Donth8 wrote:the best part is that no one is forcing you to watch it when it comes to anime.
Re: Elfen Lied
Well, it's only 13 episodes (14 if you count episode 10.5)
If you don't have a life like I do, you can finish the anime in 2 nights
Now at chapter 10 of the manga.

Re: Elfen Lied
I just found out that YouTube host the uncensored version of Elfen Lied. Some episodes don't require an 18+ account while some do. Probably because the gore and nudity vary in each episode. Some have a lot and some have even more.
Re: Elfen Lied
Huh, must only be for some videos then. I initially tried watching the series from Youtube (Like I did with Neon Genesis Evangelion, Cowboy Bebop and Death Note) but several different videos I tried either wouldn't let me or were censored, and I was using an account which would say I was over 18.

Re: Elfen Lied
@Terra You actually have to look for the viewable uncensored episodes and not just clicking the first video that comes up. It's a pain in the butt so it's better to watch it from a site that host animes only.
@Valentine Cool. Hope you enjoy it.

I did do that, no luck.
